Play On - Herlof on the Guitar

An Afternoon with FCE

Herlof was invited to share music at the North Dakota Family and Community Education Association state conference in Bismarck. With lunch and a set of tunes ranging from gospels to goofy story songs, he certainly enjoyed the afternoon with the group. On the drive home he said that it was one of his favorite shows!  Video Link. 4/2025

Care Center Sing-Along

Spring is on the way and Herlof was happy to celebrate as a musical guest at the Griggs County Care Center. As always, his set list included an enormous range of music with Johnny Cash, church hymns, and a classical selection. But the best parts were the songs that the residents sang along with.  Video Link. 4/2025

Lenten Service

Herlof provided special music for an evening Lenten service at church. He played a guitar version of the old hymn, "Just As I Am." The guitar sounded beautiful and the lyrics were appropriately sung for the penitent season. 3/2025

Growing Up!

Herlof is growing bigger - and so is his guitar! After seven years of playing on his mini guitars (and saving up his change), Herlof was very proud to purchase a full size acoustic guitar. He looks forward to all the big music to be made. 3/2025

Piano Sunday

The Hatton St. John Lutheran Church had so much fun with Guitar Sunday, they decided to expand the idea and hold Piano Sunday! Classical Strings and Other Things

Herlof hosted his very own concert for community entertainment and as a fundraiser. It featured primarily classical music along with a couple of other things. A free will offering was collected for the Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC). Herlof organized the event, advertised, printed programs, and even baked cookies. He also practiced his guitar! Video Link. 3/2025

He spends just as much time preparing for these events as others by selecting and organizing specific songs and putting in the practice to make them enjoyable for everyone. And although he practices in his pajamas at home, he makes sure to dress appropriately for the performances! 10/2024.

The Melody of America

Two of Herlof's very favorite interests include history and music. With the National History Day program he had the opportunity to combine these topics. After writing a research paper for his homeschool language arts class, he used his research efforts to create an entry for the North Dakota National History Day contest under the junior performance division. Fitting into the contest's annual theme of "Turning Points in History," Herlof chose to portray how the penning of the Star-Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key  in 1814 helped generate pride and recognition for the young nation of America, and how the melody still rings today. After advancing in the regional and state contests, Herlof brought his performance to the national level held near Washington, DC! What an honor to research and participate in history! He made a dress rehearsal video to share! Video Link. 3/2024, 4/2024, 6/2024
